Deliveries of electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids in China maintained explosive growth in April, with demand soaring 138 percent to about 82,000 vehicles.

EV sales surged 127 percent to roughly 65,000 while plug-in hybrid deliveries shot up 195 percent to around 17,000 last month, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said.

Through April, some 225,000 EVs and plug-in hybrids were delivered across the country, a jump of 149 percent from a year earlier.

In the first four months of the year, EV sales surged 130 percent to top 168,000 while plug-in hybrid volume soared 227 percent to 57,000.

CAAM didn’t reveal sales of fuel cell vehicles.

In China, only domestically produced EVs, plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles are eligible for government subsidies.

Beijing is set to enact a carbon credit program next year. It also plans to phase out subsidies for EVs and plug-in hybrids by 2020 to ease fiscal burdens.

The government expects the program to replace subsidies to shore up domestic EV sales.
